Last week’s flooding affected many communities around Vermont. In some places people will soon finish mucking out and want to begin repairs.
We need to remind people that – other than temporary emergency repairs – any proposed permanent changes need to be reviewed and permitted. And, we will need to make Substantial Damage determinations.
On Thursday July 20 at 9 am we will talk through how Substantial Damage Estimation (SDE) is done. In the coming weeks VT DEC will coordinate with you, community officials, and regional planners to support your damage assessments in town with trained staff. We will discuss how to prioritize the work, the SDE software, and the legal process.
We will also discuss the Public Assistance (PA) recovery funding that is available to towns, and how you can get additional help for local permitting and assessments.

The Drop-In Discussions are informal gatherings on the third Thursday of the month from 9 – 10 am hosted by VTDEC’s River Corridor and Floodplain Protection program. No registration is required. Come on by!
To support casual dialogue the discussions are not video-recorded. The discussions support the work of municipal officials who are responsible for floodplain and river corridor regulations, and others who are involved in the work of flood resilience in Vermont.
If you have questions about the event, or using Teams, feel free to reach out to ned.swanberg@vermont.gov
Future invitations to the Drop In Discussions will be posted to the Flood Resilience Listserv and also as News on www.floodready.vt.gov
